Synopsis:
Set during Sierra Leone's bloody civil war in 1999, this thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Danny Archer, a smuggler who sells "blood" diamonds used to finance terrorists. When Archer meets a local fisherman (Djimon Hounsou) whose son has been forced into a child army, the two men's lives become intertwined, and they set off on an adventure that leads them through the world's major diamond centers.
My two cents:
I made the mistake of watching this film without really knowing what it was about. A huge mistake. Being a fan of Djimon Hounsou’s work (Amistad, Gladiator, Deep Rising… wait, what?) and having recently enjoyed DiCaprio’s role in The Departed, I thought there was nothing to worry about. Well, there was. The movie starts out great, with a horrible massacre and several kidnapping of children. Djimon Hounsou is super pissed. Awesome! But then comes DiCaprio’s character and… I don’t even remember much after that. They do some talking, some walking around, then there’s more killings, then they run, then talk some more, and I think then there’s more killing.
The message of the movie is basically that Africa is hell on Earth. I’m serious. You can and probably will get shot, raped, or both at any moment. Remind me to cancel my safari vacation. If Africa sucks so much, why doesn’t DiCaprio get the hell out of there? Because he’s a greedy bastard, I guess. It’s just a waste of time. If you’re in a plane and this is the in-flight movie and your options are either watch the film or jump out of the plane, and for some reason you choose to watch the movie, at least know that Djimon Hounsou’s performance is top-notch as usual, and only he makes this mess watchable. Blood Diamond received an impressive five Academy award nominations, and won none. Yeah…
